My offer letter states that I am a fee-paying student, although I hold a yellow Brunei IC. What does that mean?

 

A :

It either means you have yet to submit your scholarship application form so we are not able to process your application, OR, your application is currently still being considered by MOE. Your funding status will change if your scholarship application has been approved by MOE (i.e. once you have received the scholarship approval letter).

Q :

In my offer letter, it stated that I have to attend Freshers Week. Where can I get the information on this?

 

A :

 You can go to this page  Freshers Week on information regarding the Freshers Week, and what is expected of you. You can also download the Freshers Week timetable, floor plan, UBD Student's Health Declaration Form, etc.

We will also send you an email within the two weeks prior to Freshers Week on reminder for Freshers Week and any other updated information.

What if I would like to defer my admission?

 

A :

Q :

I understand that there are some payments I have to make prior to enrolling in UBD. Can you confirm what payments I would need?

 

A :

You can refer to your offer letter for the breakdown and amount of what you have to pay, or refer to the Payment of Fees information in Before you arrive page.

All students are required to pay the acceptance fee, registration fee and insurance coverage.

Fee-paying students are required to pay the tuition fee and a deposit. You can discuss payment arrangements for tuition fees and deposit by visiting the Finance Office.

Further, if you are an undergraduate student, then it is also compulsory that you pay the PMUBD fees.

Q :

I have submitted my application for Brunei Government Scholarship. Do I still have to pay all the fees?

 

A :

 Yes, you do, especially for acceptance and registration fees as these are not covered by the scholarship. For payments for deposit and tuition fee, you may discuss go to the Finance Office to discuss, in case you are approved for scholarship later.

How can I make the payments?

 

A :

For acceptance fee, registration fee, deposit and tuition fee, you may pay using debit or credit cards via the e-Payment system, which you can access here:

If you do not have debit or credit cards, you may also pay by cash over the counter at the Finance Office, Ground Floor, Administration Block.

For PMUBD fees, you can either pay using the e-Payment system or pay cash at the PMUBD counters during Freshers Week Registration sessions (pre-Freshers Week) at Chancellor Hall.

For insurance, the participating insurance agents will be opening their booths at the pre-Freshers Week period also where you can make the purchase. If you missed the Freshers Week Registration period, then you may also purchase the preferred insurance package at the respective offices of your preferred insurance provider.

Q :

Is there a deadline to these payments?

 

A :

It is preferable that you make these payments by the pre-Freshers Week session (Freshers Registration) especially the acceptance fee, registration fee, insurance and PMUBD fees. However, you can still make the payments within the first two weeks from the start of the semester.

Q :

What if I can't pay before the pre-Freshers Week? I can only make payment during the Freshers Week.

 

A :

 You can still make the payments during Freshers Week, either using e-Payment system or over the counters. 

However, for insurance, you will need to pay at the office of your preferred agent.

Q :

How can I pay using e-Payment system?

 

A :

You can use either debit or credit cards. At this moment, we can only accept those with Mastercard or Visa logos only.

Q :

Can I pay in cash since I do not own debit or credit cards?

 

A :

Yes you can. You may go to the Finance Office at the Administration Block to make the payments or at the PMUBD counters at Chancellor Hall during the Freshers Week Registration period.

Q :

I just received my scholarship approval but I have made payments for deposit already. Can I claim it back?

 

A :

Yes you can, if you can produce the original receipt of your payment.

Q :

What happens if I can't pay my registration fee and/or acceptance fee?

 

A :

Then you will not be able to collect your UBD Student Card and you may be charged a penalty.

Q :

Why do I need to buy student insurance?

 

A :

Yes, safety is everyone's responsibility.

By definition, accidents are unforeseen, so even the most cautious are occasional victims to a rogue coffee spillage. And sometimes, accidents can happen during classes or while doing your lab experiments or even while walking around the campus, which can incur huge medical expenses.

By purchasing insurance coverage, you are taking the steps to ensure that you have the means to ease the financial burden of your beneficiaries in the event of death, total permanent disablement, medical expenses and hospital allowance due to natural and illness or accidents.

Q :

I am not able to pay for my insurance during the pre-Freshers Week. Can I pay later?

 

A :

Yes, you may, but the payment needs to be made at the office of your preferred agent, and not in UBD.

Q :

Can I pay annually, instead of lump-sum?

 

A :

If you are a Bruneian student, then unfortunately no. You will need to pay in lump sum (according to the duration of your study programme).

However, if you are an international student, you have an option to purchase for one year and renew annually, or pay in lump sum.

Q :

Does this insurance coverage includes the period I spend overseas e.g. for Discovery Year?

 

A :

No because this is for local stay only. For Discovery Year overseas or attending short programs overseas, you will need to purchase a separate insurance coverage for overseas travel and stay.

Q :

Can I claim insurance payments from my scholarship?

 

A :

Brunei Government Scholarship does not include insurance coverage.

Q :

What if I decided not to purchase insurance?

 

A :

You will not be able to collect your UBD Student Card without a valid student insurance coverage, which you will need for identification around campus and to borrow books from Library and such.

Can I pay annually, instead of lump-sum?

Do I really have to pay?

 

A :

 It is compulsory for undergraduate students, especially if you are planning to join clubs or student bodies under PMUBD or to access subsidies for overseas travel as part of student programs.

What do I do during Freshers Registration?

What if I can't attend Freshers Registration as I will be away during those days?

 

A :

Please write to student.central@ubd.edu.bn (put '2017S1' in the subject field) to inform them of this.

You will also need to make the necessary payments by e-payment or cash as per the above information, collect your FW pack, and submit the relevant forms to the Form Submission counter at Chancellor Hall during the Freshers Week itself.

However, please note that the Freshers' Week Attendance card must be completed (fully stamped) in order to collect your UBD Student Card. If you are unable to do so, you must show a copy of the email (with response of approval from the Organizing Committee) with your student card when you collect the verification slip for UBD Student Card Collection after Freshers Week.

A :

Yes it is as you will have the chance to meet the Vice Chancellor, your Faculty Deans/Directors, and take your Student Oath.

Do I have to attend all of the sessions?

 

A :

Yes, you are required to attend all the sessions as a full attendance card is needed in order to collect your UBD Student Card, and the information given during the Freshers' Week is very important for your guide in preparing you for your years in UBD.

However, the sessions marked * are optional to graduate (Masters/ PhD) students.

What does the FW numbers on the timetable mean?

 

A :

Those are when you have to collect the attendance stamps for your attendance card from our committee, to show that you have attended all the briefings for the day. At the end of the week, we shall collect this attendance card as part of the checklist for you to collect your verification slip, which you would need to collect your UBD Student Card.

Q :

What if I can't attend the whole Freshers Week?

 

A :

IYou would have to write to the Registrar & Secretary (Attn: Student Affairs) with very good reason why you will not be joining, and you still need to make all the necessary payments when you come back, and meet your Faculty Assistant Registrar for module registration matters.

You will need to show this email, with the response of approval, to the Organizing Committee when you submit your forms and payment receipts, in order to collect your verification slip.

Will our Faculty Orientation be at the Chancellor Hall? How will I know where to go, if it is not?

 

A :

 The Faculty Orientation venues are available on the 3rd page of the Freshers' Week timetable, and our student volunteers will be on hand to show you where to go on the day.

Is the Bicara Ulum Ad-Din for Muslim students only?

 

A :

No, this is open to non-Muslims as well.

Q :

I am a graduate student and I think some of the sessions do not apply to me. Do I still need to attend?

 

A :

As a graduate student, you have an option not to attend sessions which are marked with *.

Q :

I noticed that the venues may be outside of Chancellor Hall – are they of walking distance?

 

A :

Most of the areas are within walking distance, but we will be providing transportation for the following:

  1. To go to Faculty Orientation for Science students as Faculty of Science is pretty far
  2. For Campus Tour
  3. To go to the UBD Mosque for the Sembahyang Zuhur Berjemaah, Membaca Yassin dan Doa Kesyukuran

Please note that the meeting points shall be Chancellor Hall.

Can we use our cars to get to these places?

 

A :

Yes, but we prefer that you follow the buses as parking spaces may be an issue.

Q :

Will we be provided meals during the Freshers Week?

 

A :

Instead of meals, we will provide you with coupons, in which you can use to claim your meals from the participating vendors, who will be at Chancellor Hall.

However, the meals can only be from the coupon meal menu only. If you wish to get something outside of the menu, then you can top up the difference yourself.

Where can we get the coupons?

 

A :

 They will be inside the Freshers Week pack that you will receive upon registering, subject to payment of relevant fees.

Q :

I just got the offer for admission. What should I do next?

 

A :

You should start your medical fitness examination to get the medical fitness certificate. You will need to attach a copy of the medical fitness certificate with the reply of acceptance of the offer.

Will UBD reimburse me for the cost of medical fitness test?

 

A :

 No, this will be borne by yourself.

How can I get my student visa and pass?

 

A :

Please contact Madam Sendi Batu, International Student Coordinator at sendi.batu@ubd.edu.bn for the arrangements. Again, charges for this shall be borne by yourself as well.

You will need to provide the following documents:

  • A valid passport (not less than six months)
  • A completed visa application form
  • A recent passport-sized photograph
  • A copy of the UBD offer letter
  • A copy of valid insurance

What are the things I need to do prior to admission?

 

A :

You will need to make on-campus accommodation reservations by emailing reservation.ubdcorp@ubd.edu.bn (if you are staying on-campus). The details regarding the on-campus accommodations provided can be found here or http://ubdcorp.ubd.edu.bn/rates.html

You will also need to pay for:

  1. Student visa
  2. Student pass
  3. Registration fee
  4. Acceptance fee
  5. Deposit – if you are not under Brunei Government scholarship
  6. Tuition fee – if you are not under Brunei Government scholarship
  7. Travel insurance
  8. Personal student accident coverage – this may supersede the insurance coverage that we sell during the Freshers Week Registration as long as the insurance coverage is valid in Brunei Darussalam and covers you for the duration of your study.

Q :

What if the insurance coverage I purchased is not valid in Brunei or does not cover the entire duration of my study programme?

 

A :

Then you will need to purchase the insurance coverage from our local insurance provider.

Q :

How do I make arrangements for pick-up at the airport?

 

A :

 You will need to inform UBD Corp and Mdm Sendi Batu of your flight arrangement for them to arrange for airport pick-up.

Q :

Will I be allowed to bring my family/ dependents?

 

A :

You can, but not encouraged to by the Department of Immigration of Brunei Darussalam. However, if you still insist on doing so, there will be a charge of BND1,500.00 per accompanying dependent, which you must show upon application. Please note that this will not be covered in your student visa or pass.
